My studio is based in the village of Hunmanby, about 3 miles from Filey on the North Yorkshire coast. It is a well equipped workshop and teaching space dedicated to enamelling and jewellery making. It is the perfect place to spend a day during your holiday in Yorkshire and a class can often be arranged at short notice as I am in my studio most days. I am just in the process of putting together a new schedule of classes such as a variety of different enamelling classes as well as the very popular ring and bangle making workshops. I arrange workshops on a one-to-one basis so please contact me if you are interested.
Tom teaches enamelling, etching and engraving workshops in various venues in Denmark – please use the contact form if you’d like more specific information.
Introduction to Enamelling on silver £150
Dates by arrangement – Using two small fine silver pre-made blanks you will add fine silver wires to create your design. You will then learn to prepare and apply the enamel before firing it at high temperatures in a small electric kiln. You will then learn techniques for finishing and polishing your pieces of jewellery. (If you wish to make more pieces additional materials will be available to buy on the day)
Enamelling on Copper – £150 Plus the cost of copper
Learn to apply enamels to a copper surface before firing it in a small electric kiln. On this one day course you should be able to enamel a number small copper pieces that can be used as jewellery or work on slightly larger (up to 10cm x 10cm) piece to make a copper picture. Dates by arrangement. Booking essential – it is sometimes possible to book weekday classes at short notice as I am working in my studio most days – email me or use the contact form.
Jewellery Making week by week
A regular Tuesday afternoon or evening class or Thursday afternoon. This is £70 per two hour session and you can learn to make your own jewellery using either metal clay or traditional techniques. Booking is essential (though you do not have to book for consecutive weeks). It does not include materials but these can be purchased at each session.
Make each other a Wedding ring £350. Using sterling silver you will measure, cut, texture, form, solder, shape, polish and finish a wedding ring for each other. This adds an extra special memory to your wedding preparations. It is possible to make them in gold but this will be an additional charge and will require a short meeting to discuss and take precise measurements in advance. (Use the enquiry form above if you want more information or to arrange a date).
Introduction to Art Clay Silver – £150

I am also happy to teach follow on art clay classes where you can learn techniques such as constructing hollow forms, 3D forms and enamelling on silver clay. Use the enquiry form if you are interested.
Art Clay Level 1 and Level 2 certification – Dates by arrangement and price on application – subject to the prices of kits required to make the projects chosen. This course follows the syllabus set by the Aida Corporation (manufacturers of Art Clay Silver). Set projects are made over the four day period, including rings, earrings, pendants and a brooch. The course fee includes the materials to make the six projects and the use of tools and equipment. The projects are assessed and if completed successfully an application for the certificate will be made. If any of the projects are unsuccessful then arrangements can be made to ‘remake’ them at additional cost to the student.
Level 1 diploma intensive course, six projects £825 – use enquiry form for dates and booking
Level 2 diploma £825 – dates on application
I also run a course in making jewellery in New Mokume-Gane. It is a method of combining Art Clay Silver and Art Clay Copper. Mokume-Gane is a technique that is hundreds of years old and was first used in Japan, for forging swords fittings. “Mokume” means wood pattern and “Gane” a metal alloy of various metals, in this case silver and copper. It takes a lot of practice, time and equipment to learn the traditional technique of the old masters. Once again innovations by Aida Corporation in Japan who manufacture art clay products have given us new techniques for creating mixed silver. This course is only available to Certified Art Clay Instructors. It is £980 for the four days including materials. (Payment by instalments can be arranged). During the four day course you will learn six different techniques.
- Pendant in silver with copper inlay (Zougan)
- Brooch with wood grain (Guri Bori)
- Pendant or earrings with cross technique (Jyumonji)
- Marbled ring (Mazekomi)
- Pendant or earrings with feather technique (Yabane)
- Ring or pendant oil drop technique (Yuteki)
Following successful completion of the course you will have the opportunity to make and submit pieces for examination and apply for certification (there is an addition fee for the application for the certificate which is issued by Aida Corporation, Japan).
For more information you can use the contact form. I was the first certified instructor in the UK having received instruction in the Netherlands in 2012. Dates available by arrangement (Limited places available). It is possible to take this course as two x two day sessions
