I’m putting together workshops for early 2019. These will be as follows

Wednesday 16th January and 6th February Art clay Silver for enamelling. This workshop is to make pieces in art clay silver, suitable for enamel and does not include any enamelling. We suggest taking an enamelling workshop as a follow up class. These can be on consecutive days or some later date.

Thursday 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st January and 7th February
Enamelling on either copper or silver

Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th February – Etching and enamelling with Tom Lundsten £300

Wednesday 17th and 24th April Art clay silver for enamelling

Thursday 18th, 25th April and Thursday 2nd May Enamelling on silver

Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th May Enamelling on silver

The classes start at 9.45am and run until approximately 4.30pm each day. They are £170 per day, including basic materials (extra materials will be available to purchase on the day). The fee includes tea and coffee but you will need to bring a packed lunch. I always ask for 50% deposit to confirm the booking with the balance payable 7 days before the class. These classes take place in my studio in Hunmanby, near Filey, North Yorkshire.

I should also say I have a small dog. She won’t be in the studio while we are working but I always let people know in case of allergies.

There are also a few weekend dates available – please just use the contact form to enquire, letting me know the dates you are looking for.

New studio, new classes

A friend recently reminded me that although I’d shown  pictures of my new studio being built I hadn’t actually posted photos of it finished.  I’m really enjoying working and teaching in this purpose designed space.  There is plenty of room around the benches so that students can move about without disturbing each other and I can see what they’re working on.  The enamelling kilns are all installed and working and the soldering station has very good ventilation.

If you’d like to take a class in either enamelling or Jewellery making then please use the contact form and give me a few details of what you’d like to do.

The delicate art of painting enamels

21st & 22nd September 2013 Enamel painting with Tilly Wilkinson

Learn this traditional technique of enamel painting with Tilly Wlkinson. A former Chair of the Guild of Enamellers and skilled artist and teacher Tilly will introduce you to this beautiful and delicate process, creating detailed and many layered small works of art.

During this 2 day class you will learn how to create your own miniature piece of enamel painting. We will cover how to press form and prepare a suitable base from copper shim, how to apply a suitable enamel layer on which to paint and how to fire it. In addition we will look at techniques for transferring your chosen design onto the fired enamel surface prior to painting. Using finely ground enamel pigments you will be shown how to prepare them for your palette and how to apply them to your prepared base.

Apply now using the contact form (limited places available)

Enamel painting is suitable for representing a range of imagery from representational portraits to abstract designs. This class would be most suitable for those who already have a reasonable level of ability in either oil or watercolour painting and some enamelling experience.

Learn to enamel

20130417-195812.jpg

Today I have had a lovely day teaching Denise a little bit about enamelling on copper. She brought with her a small enamelled picture of trees by Harry Nicholson that she had bought some time ago and was intrigued by. She began by learning to sift thin layers of enamel onto small pieces of sheet copper, drawing into the layer of powder before firing it in the kiln at 800 degrees centigrade. Initially she used flux and white, using the copper oxides that form where the lines are drawn through the first layer to create patterns. Having established the basis of patterns she then added coloured enamels on some of her pieces. Denise finished with the largest piece where she allowed the view of the dale looking out through my studio window to inspire her and created this wonderful little landscape panel.

I know she enjoyed her day here and I always enjoy seeing how creative people can be within such a short time. I am sure this will be just the beginning of her adventure with enamel!

Images into Enamel

I have had a very busy but extremely enjoyable week. It began with a team of us from the Guild of Enamellers preparing and hanging our exhibition at the Pannett Art Gallery in Whitby.

20120709-203246.jpg
Myself, Margaret Hopley, Harry Nicholson, Tilly and David Cowling together with the gallery staff spent two days putting up all the work we had received from members around the country.

20120709-203549.jpg

20120709-203600.jpg
There is some beautiful work and the exhibition has already received lots of compliments and a few sales. It was opened on Friday evening by the Mayor of Whitby, Mr John Freeman who said that he was impressed by the level of skill demonstrated and by the variety of techniques.

20120709-204053.jpg

Over the weekend Tilly Wilkinson has been teaching a two day workshop in my studio. This was called Images into Enamel and Tilly began by introducing the group to ways of developing images to make them suitable for screen printing techniques.

20120709-204659.jpg
Here the group are testing some of the screens before they began to enamel.

20120709-204959.jpg
It was a very busy weekend and everyone enjoyed it so I am hoping to run similar classes in the future.

20120709-205056.jpg

20120709-205339.jpg

20120709-205358.jpg

After all this activity I was inspired to get out some screens I had from a couple of years ago and mount them up so that I could try them.

20120709-205537.jpg

And here is the piece I enamelled this afternoon, after Tilly and David had gone – I can now think of lots of ways of using this technique to develop my work in a slightly different direction so thank you to everyone who made this such a successful weekend workshop!
