Learn this traditional technique of enamel painting with Tilly Wlkinson. A former Chair of the Guild of Enamellers and skilled artist and teacher Tilly will introduce you to this beautiful and delicate process, creating detailed and many layered small works of art.

During this 2 day class you will learn how to create your own miniature piece of enamel painting. We will cover how to press form and prepare a suitable base from copper shim, how to apply a suitable enamel layer on which to paint and how to fire it. In addition we will look at techniques for transferring your chosen design onto the fired enamel surface prior to painting. Using finely ground enamel pigments you will be shown how to prepare them for your palette and how to apply them to your prepared base.

Enamel painting is suitable for representing a range of imagery from representational portraits to abstract designs. This class would be most suitable for those who already have a reasonable level of ability in either oil or watercolour painting and some enamelling experience.

Exciting new masterclass in PMC Sterling silver clay

Overgrown Garden Vessels with Lesley Messam
7th and 8th September 2013,

Lesley Messam is an inventive and highly skilled artist and jeweller. She has reached Level 4 in the Metal Clay Masters Registry, only the second person in the world to achieve this. She is constantly experimenting and exploring techniques in construction and is an experienced and generous teacher.

I am delighted that she has agreed to teach here in North Yorkshire and to share her techniques for creating a small vessel with a threaded closure. In this workshop you will learn how to use PMC Sterling* silver clay to construct a very beautiful hollow formed vessel with a clever screw threaded lid, embellished with a cabochon of glass or stone, set after firing.

Sterling silver does have some advantages over fine silver, its additional strength is great for pendants on long chains that could be accidentally knocked and also for rings where durability is important.

Lesley will teach us how to make a screw thread in various sizes at minimal cost. Her method does not use gadgets or kits; works every time; is cheap and works to make the thread in many different sizes.

She will also show you how to add texture your vessel without the use of commercial texture sheets so that you can add embellishments of your own unique design or, if you would prefer to make little roses she will be happy to show you how.

It will be £150 per person plus cost of copper available to purchase on the day.
Using a range of enamel techniques produce a landscape based wall panel from your own images.
You will incorporate a range of techniques including sifting, scrafitto and stencilling to produce your own personal response to a landscape that you love. You will learn how to prepare, counter enamel and finish your copper. A range of enamels are included in the price. Copper in various sizes will available to purchase on the day.

Introduction to enamel on copper £140 with Lynne Glazzard Wednesdays by arrangement from January 23rd, 2013 Learn to create your own small copper panels, this course runs from alternate Wednesdays by arrangement and includes a small amount of copper and enamel, additional copper will be available to purchase on the day. This is run by me as a four day course following the syllabus set out by Aida Corporation and can either be four consecutive days, two pairs of two days or four separate days within a one month period. Saturday 1st June Introduction to enamel painting with Tilly Wilkinson £175 per person including all materials – During this 1 day class you will learn how to create your own miniature piece of enamel painting. You will be provided with pre prepared copper bases and a range of stimulus material to work from. You will look at techniques for transferring your chosen design onto the fired enamel surface prior to painting. Using finely ground enamel pigments you will be shown how to prepare them for your palette and how to apply them to your prepared base. No experience is necessary but some interest or ability in either oil or watercolour painting will be helpful.

On the weekends of 8th & 9th June and 15th & 16th June Lynne will be taking part in North Yorkshire Open Studios so the studio will be open to visitors (Enamelling Wednesdays will be available during the period of open studios, advanced booking essential)

Colourful Carnival Masks workshop with Joy Funnell

I am still working on my class schedule for 2013. One exciting event will be a two day workshop by Joy Funnell and I am taking bookings now and this class is booking up, so get your booking in quickly.
29th and 30th June 2013 – Colourful Carnival Masks with Joy Funnell
£385 per person including materials

Joy Funnell is well known for her colourful silver and enamel Venetian carnival mask pendants. On this 2 day workshop you will learn how to create your own unique silver mask using Art Clay Silver. Then we will cover how to add wires to the mask for decoration before enamelling them to create your very own colourful carnival mask pendant. You will learn tips and tricks including creating the best surface on the silver for the enamel, making a three dimensional mask shape, making bails and decorating the reverse of your piece including setting small stones. Once the masks are fired and polished you will learn Joy’s unique Enamelled Accents technique for adding wires to make free standing cells for enamel. After covering how to prepare the enamels to get the brightest clearest colours you will learn how to wet lay them onto your piece and how different colour enamels can be used and blended together. Finally we will use patination to accentuate the bright enamel colours and the textures. During this workshop you will have a rainbow of enamel colours to use that you will be able to take home with you afterwards. Some previous experience with silver clay is necessary.

Planning new classes

I am just in the process of planning new classes for the autumn and for Spring 2013. I will be inviting some guest tutors to run classes here in my beautiful studio in North Yorkshire and classes will include jewellery making, learning to enamel, enamelling silver jewellery, bead making and art clay silver, metal clay or PMC.

Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October 2012 Cloisonne enamel on art clay silver £350
A two day workshop. On the first day you will design and make a silver pendant, learning about design for enamel. On the second day you will prepare and apply wire patterns followed by thin layers of enamel, firing each layer in turn. You will then learn methods for finishing the piece to a high standard. The course includes small amounts of enamel, enough to complete the project.

Saturday 27th October 2012 Introduction to Art Clay Silver £145

Thursday 8th and Friday 9th November 2012 – two day workshop. Glass and art clay silver combination beads with Lynne Glazzard £360. On the first day you will learn to apply a variety of art clay silver products to the surface of glass beads before firing and annealing them in the kiln. On day two you will make some art clay silver beads to complement the glass beads before finishing them all to a high standard. Some glass beads are included in the course fee but not the art clay silver. A detailed materials list will be supplied in advance but you will need approximately 20g Art Clay 650; 10g Syringe type, Art Clay Silver Overlay paste

Art Clay Level 1 certification – Dates by arrangement and price on application – subject to the prices of kits required to make the projects chosen. This is a four day course following the syllabus set by the Aida Corporation (manufacturers of Art Clay Silver). Seven projects are made over the four day period, including rings, earrings, pendants and a brooch. The course fee includes the materials to make the seven projects and the use of tools and equipment. The projects are assessed and if completed successfully an application for the certificate will be made to the Art Clay UK Guild. If any of the projects are unsuccessful then arrangements can be made to ‘remake’ them at additional cost to the student.

Images into Enamel

I have had a very busy but extremely enjoyable week. It began with a team of us from the Guild of Enamellers preparing and hanging our exhibition at the Pannett Art Gallery in Whitby.

There is some beautiful work and the exhibition has already received lots of compliments and a few sales. It was opened on Friday evening by the Mayor of Whitby, Mr John Freeman who said that he was impressed by the level of skill demonstrated and by the variety of techniques.

Over the weekend Tilly Wilkinson has been teaching a two day workshop in my studio. This was called Images into Enamel and Tilly began by introducing the group to ways of developing images to make them suitable for screen printing techniques.
