Art Clay Diploma

I am pleased to say that I am now ready to teach the Art Clay Diploma again, having set up my new studio here in Hunmanby.

On these courses your work needs to achieve high enough marks to pass, and it has to be all your own work. I will work along side you, advise and demonstrate steps but you are working by yourself.  I teach each Level over 4 days allowing you time to make without being too rushed, so you can work to the best of your ability.
Dates are by arrangement and the course follows the syllabus set by the Aida Corporation (manufacturers of Art Clay Silver)
Art Clay Level 1 Diploma
4 days
Set projects are made over the four day period, including rings, earrings, pendants and a brooch. The course fee includes the materials to make the six projects and the use of tools and equipment.  The projects are assessed and completed successfully an application for the certificate will be made.
Cost £625 includes all materials and use of all tools.

If any of the projects are unsuccessful then arrangements can be made to remake them at additional cost to the student.

Art Clay Level 2 Diploma
4 days
On the Level 2 diploma you will make 4 projects covering a wide range of skills following on from the Level 1.  The projects are again assessed and if completed successfully an application for the certificate will be made.  Cost £675 includes all materials and use of all tools.

If any of the projects are unsuccessful then arrangements can be made to remake them at additional cost to the student.
Combined Level 1 & Level 2 Diplomas – 7 days
Take both Levels consecutively over 7 days. Definitely not for the faint hearted as this is hard work.
Cost £1200 includes all materials and use of all tools. All you need to bring is a packed lunch each day.

For more information you can contact me using the contact form

Terms and conditions 50% deposit required to confirm a place, balance payable by Paypal or cash 7 days prior to the first day of the class.

Coastal inspiration

My recent move has taken me much closer to the wonderful Yorkshire coast and, even though it’s the middle of winter, I have had some lovely walks with Lucy, my dog. The way on to the beach at Hunmanby gap has some small gabions at the top of the beach. I think these are to break and filter the power of the sea, but they seem a little small to my inexpert  eye.  They do provide a little inspiration and I may produce a small series of pieces related to coastal protection. At this point in the year, after recent record rainfalls, there is more chance of coastal erosion especially along the clay cliffs here locally, the rain running rapidly off the land is constantly washing down chunks of cliff.

New year and New Mokume Gane courses

As part of my programme for 2014 I am going to be teaching the New Mokume Gane techniques using Art Clay Silver and Art Clay Copper. I am at present the only instructor in the UK who has taken this course devised by Aida Corporation in Japan so this is a unique opportunity to learn some of these fabulous techniques. Only those with the full Art Clay diploma will be eligible to apply for certification but I am happy to teach projects and familiarisation courses for those who would like to begin their journey. I also teach the art clay diploma courses by arrangement so please use the comment form if you would be interested in doing any of these. More details about the New Mokume Gane course can be found on my website

Exciting new masterclass in PMC Sterling silver clay

Overgrown Garden Vessels with Lesley Messam
7th and 8th September 2013,
£385 per person (including materials)

Lesley Messam is an inventive and highly skilled artist and jeweller. She has reached Level 4 in the Metal Clay Masters Registry, only the second person in the world to achieve this. She is constantly experimenting and exploring techniques in construction and is an experienced and generous teacher.

I am delighted that she has agreed to teach here in North Yorkshire and to share her techniques for creating a small vessel with a threaded closure. In this workshop you will learn how to use PMC Sterling* silver clay to construct a very beautiful hollow formed vessel with a clever screw threaded lid, embellished with a cabochon of glass or stone, set after firing.

Sterling silver does have some advantages over fine silver, its additional strength is great for pendants on long chains that could be accidentally knocked and also for rings where durability is important.

Lesley will teach us how to make a screw thread in various sizes at minimal cost. Her method does not use gadgets or kits; works every time; is cheap and works to make the thread in many different sizes.

She will also show you how to add texture your vessel without the use of commercial texture sheets so that you can add embellishments of your own unique design or, if you would prefer to make little roses she will be happy to show you how.

*Art clay silver is an option if you prefer – indicate on the booking form

Text series – Enamelled Jewellery

20121024-174703.jpg
I have recently been working on a new series of pieces of jewellery. These are enamel on silver and involve a combination of different techniques. I have created photopolymer printing plates with fragments of old text and in some of the piece you can clearly see words beneath the transparent enamels, on other pieces the text is not quite so apparent. This pendant is quite small, only 25mm x 17.5mm
