Learn to enamel

Today I have had a lovely day teaching Denise a little bit about enamelling on copper. She brought with her a small enamelled picture of trees by Harry Nicholson that she had bought some time ago and was intrigued by. She began by learning to sift thin layers of enamel onto small pieces of sheet copper, drawing into the layer of powder before firing it in the kiln at 800 degrees centigrade. Initially she used flux and white, using the copper oxides that form where the lines are drawn through the first layer to create patterns. Having established the basis of patterns she then added coloured enamels on some of her pieces. Denise finished with the largest piece where she allowed the view of the dale looking out through my studio window to inspire her and created this wonderful little landscape panel.

I know she enjoyed her day here and I always enjoy seeing how creative people can be within such a short time. I am sure this will be just the beginning of her adventure with enamel!

Landscape into Enamel

On Saturday 27th April 2013 I will be hosting a wonderful workshop – Landscape into Enamel with Tilly Wilkinson here in my studio on the North York Moors.
It will be £150 per person plus cost of copper available to purchase on the day.
Using a range of enamel techniques produce a landscape based wall panel from your own images.
You will incorporate a range of techniques including sifting, scrafitto and stencilling to produce your own personal response to a landscape that you love. You will learn how to prepare, counter enamel and finish your copper. A range of enamels are included in the price. Copper in various sizes will available to purchase on the day.

Text series – Enamelled Jewellery

I have recently been working on a new series of pieces of jewellery. These are enamel on silver and involve a combination of different techniques. I have created photopolymer printing plates with fragments of old text and in some of the piece you can clearly see words beneath the transparent enamels, on other pieces the text is not quite so apparent. This pendant is quite small, only 25mm x 17.5mm

Planning new classes

I am just in the process of planning new classes for the autumn and for Spring 2013. I will be inviting some guest tutors to run classes here in my beautiful studio in North Yorkshire and classes will include jewellery making, learning to enamel, enamelling silver jewellery, bead making and art clay silver, metal clay or PMC.

Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October 2012 Cloisonne enamel on art clay silver £350
A two day workshop. On the first day you will design and make a silver pendant, learning about design for enamel. On the second day you will prepare and apply wire patterns followed by thin layers of enamel, firing each layer in turn. You will then learn methods for finishing the piece to a high standard. The course includes small amounts of enamel, enough to complete the project.

Saturday 27th October 2012 Introduction to Art Clay Silver £145

Thursday 8th and Friday 9th November 2012 – two day workshop. Glass and art clay silver combination beads with Lynne Glazzard £360. On the first day you will learn to apply a variety of art clay silver products to the surface of glass beads before firing and annealing them in the kiln. On day two you will make some art clay silver beads to complement the glass beads before finishing them all to a high standard. Some glass beads are included in the course fee but not the art clay silver. A detailed materials list will be supplied in advance but you will need approximately 20g Art Clay 650; 10g Syringe type, Art Clay Silver Overlay paste

Art Clay Level 1 certification – Dates by arrangement and price on application – subject to the prices of kits required to make the projects chosen. This is a four day course following the syllabus set by the Aida Corporation (manufacturers of Art Clay Silver). Seven projects are made over the four day period, including rings, earrings, pendants and a brooch. The course fee includes the materials to make the seven projects and the use of tools and equipment. The projects are assessed and if completed successfully an application for the certificate will be made to the Art Clay UK Guild. If any of the projects are unsuccessful then arrangements can be made to ‘remake’ them at additional cost to the student.

Terms and conditions 50% deposit required to confirm a place, balance payable by cheque or cash 7 days prior to the first day of the class.

7 days notice of cancellation is required so that I can resell the workshop place.
In the event of cancellation more than 7 days before the class the deposit can be carried over to another mutually convenient date.
Cancellation by the student less than 7 days prior to a workshop will result in forfeit of your deposit and course fee
Each class has a maximum number of places available and a minimum number before it can run. If I have to cancel a workshop I will give as much notice as possible and a place will be offered for an alternative workshop at a future date. Refunds will be given in the event of tutor illness or insufficient numbers booked for a workshop.

More cloisonné pendants

Today I have had another fun day teaching Steph a bit about cloisonné enamel on silver. The workshop was a present from her husband so she didn’t really know what to expect although she had done some basic enamelling on copper a few years ago, so knew a little about enamel.

We began by selecting shapes and sketching a little pattern each for the wires before cutting and fixing them into place. We then prepared some enamel colours by grinding and washing them (although, as usual, I had some prepared ready for us to use). Steph decided she liked one of my little bird pendant samples so explained how to break the pattern down to make the fine silver wire shapes in sections.

This is my piece – that is supposed to be a fish in the bird’s beak! It is approximately 18mm in diameter – a bit of a contrast with yesterday’s panels that are 250mm x 250mm.

At the end of the day Steph had made a little bird pendant; a pendant with an abstract pattern and earrings to match it and here she is wearing all her beautiful work.

Wet packing enamel onto fine silver jewellery

Today I have made a little video clip of me wet laying enamel onto the surface of a small piece of silver. Here is the piece at the end of the torch firing process. I will now have to work out how to add video clips to my blog so that I can share the whole thing 🙂

Beginners Guide to Enamelling

For anyone interested in learning to enamel I can highly recommend this book by Dorothy Cockrell. She is a longstanding member of the Guild of Enamellers and editor of the Guild’s quarterly journal. She writes in a very clear, no-nonsense style and this is a well illustrated book, with plenty of projects to get you started.

I would also recommend you to join the Guild even as a complete beginner, as joining will bring you into contact with such an enthusiastic bunch of people, generously willing to share their knowledge at regional meetings and other Guild events. A number of members run classes, often aimed at beginners and at introductory level. If you would like any further information then either have a look at the Guild website or email me.
