Open Studios and more Whitby Abbey enamels

I will be open on Saturday 9th June, Sunday 10th, Friday 15th, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June 2012 and also be open during the week 11th to 14th June by appointment. During Open Studios I will be demonstrating a variety of techniques during the day, starting at 11am – including making unique silver jewellery using art clay silver.

The road from Egton to Glaisdale is going to be closed near Beggars Bridge for three weeks during the period of Open Studios. To get to Glaisdale you will have to approach via Lealholm or Rosedale. This affects anyone intending to visit – but it will be worth the trip to see my wonderful new studio, watch demos and buy something from my new ranges of work.

Here are to more of my enamelled panels of Whitby Abbey, one with a moth and the other without. I have really enjoyed working on these and they are for sale here in my studio this weekend.

There are plenty of other new things available too, from hand made lamp-work glass beads with silver cores to jewellery inspired by pressed flowers and flying things such as bats, moths and birds. My cabinets are all set up and filled and the studio is looking lovely with all this work on display.

I look forward to meeting lots of new people and hopefully some old friends too over the coming weekend.

Whitby Abbey series

I began the day by doing a bit of cleaning and tidying ready for North Yorkshire Open Studios and put a few enamels up on the wall, the first things to go up since my studio was rebuilt at the beginning of the year.

I had to give in to the urge to work on more of a series of enamelled panels of Whitby Abbey with moths.

Here you can see one of the panels I have been working on. Each time I apply a colour the panel has to be fired in the kiln at around 800 degrees centigrade. Opening the door means a lot of heat is lost and this kiln takes a while to get back up to temperature but I enjoy working slowly at this scale.

This panel is the first one I did a few weeks ago – but today decided it needed more work. Enamel is a fantastic and versatile medium to work in and will withstand a large number of firings so it was possible to continue to add detail to this piece.

Here is another, maybe my favourite so far but I will probably change my mind by tomorrow.

I had a short break mid afternoon when I had a visit from fellow Open Studios artist Caroline Riley who came to drop some leaflets and cards off from other local artists and collect some signs ready for the weekend. I hope we all get plenty of visitors and am looking forward to meeting new people, demonstrating techniques, sharing ideas and selling some work!

Whitby Abbey and moths

I have spent the day working on three enamel panels. I had made a sketch and had ideas for these some time ago but needed some free time to work on them.

These images are built up in layers of different colours, firing each layer and allowing it to cool before continuing.

I used a combination of techniques, making a stencil in paper of the outline of the abbey and stippling, painting and wet laying enamels.

It is the first time I have had the big kiln running for ages and it is hot and tiring work lifting these panels in and out. It was an interesting project to work on and I think the next thing I need to do are some paintings of moths and butterflies.
